DEPRESSION: THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

Did you feel like staying in bed today? Did you feel that you couldn’t be bothered getting dressed and forcing yourself out into the world? Do you feel like every conversation happens meters away from you, despite your efforts to drag yourself into the here and now? Do you feel a sadness you can’t explain and cannot seem to shake? If you have grown to know symptoms like this, then it is possible that you are suffering from depression.

You are not alone. Depression affects up to one in four females and one in six males during their lifetime. It is a serious illness, with both physical and psychological symptoms. Depression is also an illness that you should not be scared or embarrassed to admit that you may suffer from. In fact, admitting to yourself that your moodiness, lack of energy and sadness is serious any may be a depressive illness is an important first step to gaining treatment.

Acknowledging that you may be suffering from depression means that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Treatment for depression – both medical and psychological – is readily available. Treatment for depression is also safe and effective. There is no reason for you to always feel as low as you do today.

If you are still unsure whether your sadness is something more serious, it may be a good idea to take a depression test. These simple depression tests, which you can take anonymously on the internet, are a good indicator of whether or not you may be suffering from depression. The tests evaluate your behaviors (Have you stopped seeing your friends? Do you rely on sedatives or alcohol to get through the day?), thoughts (I’m a failure! Life is not worth living!) and feelings (being overwhelmed, indecisive and frustrated). The tests also check your physical symptoms (tired all the time, sick and run down) of depression.

It’s likely that you are familiar with many of these symptoms. In fact, if you answer yes to more than three of these behaviors, feelings, thoughts and physical symptoms, you should arrange to see your physician or health care professional.

Your doctor can help you to devise a plan of treatment to make you feel better. Medications, in combination with physical exercise and, in some cases, counseling, can help you conquer your depression. Although you may feel that nothing will ever be enjoyable again, you will not always feel this way. Depression is treatable. You owe it to yourself to take your feelings seriously and to talk to your doctor today.
